How this calculator works

It follows the same steps as a Ghanaian payroll. First it takes the employee's 5.5% SSNIT contribution off basic salary (up to the GH₵69,000 monthly ceiling for 2026). It adds any taxable allowances, takes off Tier 3 contributions within the 16.5% relief limit, and the result is the chargeable income. That income is then walked up the GRA's monthly PAYE bands, and each slice is taxed at its band's rate.

The new bands from 1 September 2026 raise the tax-free amount to GH₵588 a month. Switch the tax table to compare with the bands that applied from January 2024 to August 2026. Lower earners pay a little less on the new bands, and anyone with chargeable income above about GH₵3,817 a month pays slightly more. We explain why in ourguide to the new PAYE bands.

What it doesn't include

  • Bonuses and overtime, which have their own tax rates. Use thebonus and overtime tax calculator.
  • Benefits in kind, such as a company car or accommodation, which the GRA values separately.
  • Other reliefs, such as mortgage interest or marriage, disability and old age reliefs.
  • Non-resident employees, who are taxed at a flat 25%.

Questions we often hear

Is SSNIT taken off before PAYE?

Yes. The employee's 5.5% SSNIT contribution is deducted from income before PAYE is worked out, so it lowers the tax.

Why is PAYE on my September payslip higher than August?

If your chargeable income is above about GH₵3,817 a month, the new bands charge slightly more, usually GH₵6 a month, because the 17.5%, 25% and 30% bands now end a little earlier.

Do the bands apply per month or per year?

Employers deduct PAYE monthly, using the monthly table. The GRA also publishes an annual table, which is exactly twelve times the monthly one, for annual returns.
