Ghana's compulsory pension contribution is 18.5% of basic salary: 5.5% from the employee and 13% from the employer. It is paid in two parts. 13.5% goes to SSNIT as Tier 1 (the employee's 5.5% plus 8 points of the employer's 13%), and 5% goes to a private Tier 2 trustee licensed by the NPRA.
From 1 January 2026, contributions are worked out on basic salary up to GH₵69,000 a month, the maximum insurable earnings. Above that, the calculator uses GH₵69,000, which makes the largest Tier 1 payment GH₵9,315.
Tier 3 is voluntary. Contributions from the employee and employer together are tax-free up to 16.5% of basic salary, and anything above that is taxed. For the full picture, read our guide to SSNIT, Tier 2 and Tier 3.
SSNIT expects Tier 1 contributions by the 14th of the following month. Tier 2 is paid to your trustee on the schedule in your scheme's trust deed, usually at the same time. Late payment attracts penalties.
No. It's calculated on basic salary. Allowances are left out.
No. Tier 2's 5% comes out of the employer's 13%. The employee's only compulsory contribution is the 5.5%.
